Day 22 - Return to Europoort

Our final day would be leisurely. We were under three hours from the ferry and had five hours to get there.

Antwerp was the only real obstacle in our path. The traffic was horrendous, but we managed to sneak through the quieter way. The faced a toll, the queue of which was longer than all but one border (Moldova-Romania).

Seemingly, the Dutch don’t believe in service stations so we swung off into Steenbergen, the final resting place of Dambuster, Guy Gibson. It was scorching so we made do with snacks and drinks.

We were still early so rerouted ourselves via Brielle as it was close to Europoort. This historic seaport was beautiful and like stepping back in time. Traditional Dutch houses and clean streets centred on a little river.

But we couldn’t delay it any longer. Our time had come.

There was a celebratory feel on the ferry, albeit a tired one. After drinks while watching the football, we were done.

The next morning, we arrived in Hull. Manic Mondeo had done it

Driving nearly 5,000 miles in three weeks, we had encountered potholed roads, narrow mountain passes and chaotic city roundabouts; incessant rain, thunderstorms and searing heat; long days and tiring drives; and bangs and squeaks from our car. We had been tested and come through largely unscathed.

Needless to say, we had the last laugh.

Songs of the day

Craig: Turkish Girl by Shantel

Jase: You Never Even Call Me By My Name by David Allan Coe

Ian: And Nothing Is Forever by the Cure
