With Rosemary carrying us high into the olive-clad hills above Trigier, we got to see this part of Dalmatian coast in all its sub-kissed glory.
At a service station, Ian completed the holy trinity of Balkan food. Pljeskavica in Prizren, Ćevapi in Podgorica and Mostar, and Burek in Croatia.
Our first destination was a UNESCO World Heritage site, one of Croatia’s most famous natural wonders. Plitvice lakes are understandably famous and, despite staying in tourist-heavy Trogir last night, it was still a surprise to see so many cars, coaches and people. It wasn’t cheap either.

But it was beautiful and like something out of the Lost World. Huge, plunging waterfalls cascaded into pools of jade water. All around it, chalky coloured cliffs topped by dense forest provided a suitable frame.

It was also vast and Ian and Jase only explored a fraction.

Back outside, Craig enjoyed a traditional song-and-dance performance. But more importantly, saw a guy ‘smoking’ an electric pipe. The choice of only the most discerning of hipsters.
As has been tradition on this trip after the first day, we booked accommodation when near our day’s final destination. We’ve never quite achieved today’s level of excellence though. Garden Brewery in Zagreb is renowned for its craft beers. And we like craft beers. The perfect place to mull over our lodging options.
It was a success, of sorts, and we checked in to an authentic Cold War-era hotel. Complete with outdated amenities and questionable hygiene. Ian enjoyed it, Craig less so.
Jase was focused on curry, often a risk in parts of eastern and central Europe. It turns out Zagreb is a hotbed of Indian cuisine and we enjoyed a delicious meal while chatting to a part-owner of Croatia’s basketball champions.
The wind had suddenly picked up. No, not just in that way. There was a storm brewing and when it came, it was impressive, lighting up the sky and flashing an unflattering light on our nigh’s accommodation.
Songs of the day

Ian: ESDB by Deichkind
