On a journey through time and space, we left Constanta following signs for 23 August, 2 May, Neptune, Jupiter and Venus.

Most of these were Romanian beach resorts and we stopped off at the last one, the slightly famous Vamă Veche. It has a very laidback vibe and appealed to us all. Ian called it his Zihuatanejo (reference from Shawshank Redemption). Jim said: “I don’t mind hippies when they’ve got beach bars.”

The Bulgarian border was so easy as there were no guards. There was a sheepdip that splashed into our car and into Ian’s eyes. He’s not yet blind, but stayed tuned.

Our first fully sunny day driving was largely uneventful. It was great to be on the road again and we were taking it leisurely.

Passing through Varna, we followed a surprisingly mountainous route near the coast.

Overlooking Sunny Beach, we noticed the stunning turquoise water and totally understood its popularity. But we weren’t here for sunny fun times. We were here to see a UNESCO World Heritage town.

Nessebar is amazing. Wooden-framed Ottoman houses and stone paths covered this pearl-shaped peninsula. Enjoying seafood at a restaurant overlooking the tempting Black Sea, it was heaven.

We even booked our accommodation near Burgas. What could go wrong?

Well, walking into the accommodation, it turned out it was no longer a hotel. Ah. More accommodation was thankfully found nearby and…

We picked up Jase! We are now fully stocked and ready to reach the Balkans.
